CHAMISE takes its name from one of the chaparral’s most resilient shrubs, a fitting counterpart for a compact yard asked to do so much. Our clients envisioned a complete transformation of their turf-heavy landscape—seeking a place to read and write, relax and exercise, entertain friends, and grow food, all while feeling immersed in something that resembled nature rather than a traditional yard.
To support that mix of needs, the garden was reimagined as a series of small, interconnected moments. Carefully placed boulders anchor the space, while a custom redwood bench, hammock, and a modest stone water feature create opportunities for rest and reflection. A custom pull-up tower adds room for movement, and a flagstone patio with a bistro table offers a place to gather. Raised cedar beds support homegrown food, and the entire garden is wrapped in a planting palette drawn from the surrounding mountains—chaparral species, a perennial meadow, and a newly planted California sycamore to cast shade and structure as it matures.
