Residential Garden

HAZEN offers a contemporary interpretation of the landscape surrounding a historic Richard Neutra residence in Beverly Hills. Guided by the existing coast live oak canopy on the slope above the home, the design honors the site's natural woodland character while introducing native and climate-appropriate plantings that deepen the ecological value of the garden.

Rather than replicating an earlier landscape, the approach responds to Neutra's architectural clarity — favoring restraint, natural materials, and a strong relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. New oaks were planted as keystone species and focal points, with an understory of cascading, textural, and habitat-supportive species that echo the surrounding foothill ecology.

The result is a landscape that is understated, timeless, and rooted in a sense of place — strengthening the home's original spirit while enhancing its ecological richness.
